Insurers lead the way with new standard for climate reporting
The Dutch insurance sector is the first in the Netherlands and Europe to introduce a common standard to measure and report on the CO₂ emissions of their insurance policies. This puts the sector at the forefront of complying with the new European ESG legislation (rules for the environment, people and governance).
The ESG-CSRD Toolkit of the Dutch Association of Insurers , published on 5 March, during the climate afternoon, first contains the sectoral Insurance Reporting Guidelines ESG (NL-IRGE) for private car insurance and business insurance. With these standards, insurers can calculate how much CO₂ emissions are associated with these insurances. That provides insight. And with that insight, they can work in a targeted way to reduce emissions and work towards a climate-neutral insurance portfolio. The project was developed by insurers, together with the Association and with the support of Deloitte.
Why this matters
Insurers see the consequences of climate change like no other. They have to deal with increasing damage due to extreme weather on a daily basis, such as heavy rain, floods, hail and storms. If CO₂ emissions do not fall and we do not meet the Paris climate targets, these damages will increase further. This affects people, companies and society as a whole. That is precisely why the sector believes it is important to take responsibility.
In October 2025, the board of the Association decided to expand the approach to Private Housing and Road Transport. These will probably be published at the end of March. The use of the standard is voluntary, and insurers remain responsible for their own reporting and climate goals.
