Sometimes there are incidents with flammable insulation material. Insulation is important from a sustainability point of view. But for cost reasons and to meet climate standards, flammable plastic insulation materials, such as combustible EPS, are still often chosen.
In addition to houses, businesses, hospitals and schools, there are also barn fires in which flammable insulation material plays a major role. Applied construction materials can contribute to prevention, but combustible insulation materials ensure that fires spread faster. This makes it more difficult to flee and to limit the consequences of a fire.
For example, major improvements can be made in new construction and renovation, according to insurers. Insurers believe that only non-combustible construction materials should be used in construction, where possible. This must in any case apply to the main load-bearing structure, the façade, roofs and walls – including insulation material. They also believe that the use of foam plastic insulation materials should be avoided and Euro fire class A1, A2 and/or B is advised. The Association has developed the brochure 'Brandgedrag van isolatiematerialen'. This shows the differences between insulation materials and describes where these materials may be used.
